CUSS Group
Studio grant holders in Stockholm 4 February – 28 April 2019
CUSS Group (ZAF). Born in the 1980s in South Africa. Lives and works in Johannesburg.
CUSS GROUP’s activities span the founding of a web television initiative, online publications, digital art and curatorial projects at their HQ in Johannesburg. The collective responds to commercial, cultural and technological super-hybridity through a filter of urban trends, material artefacts and youth culture in contemporary post-postcolonial South Africa. In a number of events, including their ongoing series of curated platforms, “Video Party” (2013-14), they have used non-traditional spaces such as shops to insert art into the everyday and democratise its audiences. For CUSS GROUP, who are attuned to digital developments in a globalised contemporaneity, the exclusionary constructs are the legacy of political and colonial histories in the post-geographical realm of bots and trolls – as well as in art-world formats and institutions.
CUSS GROUP is a multi-skilled artist collective comprising Animation, Fashion, Fine Art and Politics graduates. Recently, CUSS GROUP participated in the 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, 2016. They created a three-episode series titled “Fully Automated Luxury Influencer” to the first season of “Genre-Nonconforming: The DIS Edutainment Network”, which aired throughout 2018. Prior to these shows the group exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art Warsaw’s “Art After the Internet” (2014) and the City of Paris Museum of Modern Art’s “Co-Workers” (2015).
