Munish Wadhia
Artist in Residence in Stockholm, 4 November 2024–25 April 2025
Munish Wadhia (b. 1972, Mombasa, Kenya) is an artist living and working in Sweden. His work deals with painting through an experimental and interdisciplinary approach, where his ideas are concerned with collective memories, inheritance, and the amnesiac absence of knowledges in Westernised discourses. His practice appears as large-scale immersive painterly installations that playfully bring the ‘exotic foreign’ and ‘familiar’ into shared proximities, blurring the margins of difference and setting up poetic relations between materials and pigments familiar to his ancestorial roots, and materials and objects found locally.
At IASPIS, Munish plans to develop new works using his expanded painterly practice that weaves through landscapes, objects, and the act of collecting, along with experimental material and digital video investigations.
Munish Wadhia studied Fine Art painting at the Royal College of Art, London. He has participated in the exhibition: Stockholm Cosmology (2024), Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm Sweden; held solo exhibitions at Södertälje Konsthall (2023), Sweden, and The Royal Art Academy (2022), Stockholm, Sweden; artist in residence at GrafikensHus, Collecting Thoughts (2022), Sweden; ‘Made in Sweden’, Match Museum (2020); Scholarships and Grants Carl-Axel Valen (2024), Sweden, The Royal Art Academy (2020).
