Youmna Chlala
Artist in residence, Stockholm, June 13 – August 28, 2023
Youmna Chlala is an artist based in New York. Her work is an investigation of fate and architecture. Her current series, The Museum of Future Memories, is a collection of drawings, photographs, sculptures, and installations that imagine what will happen when the horizon line disappears. How will we know where we are? How can we find ourselves collectively through intimate encounters? The series is site-specific and has previously taken place in Norway, Brazil, New York, Dubai, and Denmark. The most recent iteration was about Brooklyn’s plants and flowers that are slowly migrating north to avoid the rising heat, and the adjacent species that are helping them move.
Youmna has exhibited at the Hayward Gallery, London; The Drawing Center, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; Henie Onstad Art Center, Høvikodden; Concrete Gallery, Hessel Museum of Art, New York; Fridman Gallery, New York; and MAK Center for Art and Architecture. She participated in the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo, 2017, LIAF Biennial in Norway, and the 11th Performa Biennial. She is the co-editor of the Spatial Species series at Coffee House Press and co-founder of the Mutating Cities Institute. She is the author of The Paper Camera, a book of poetry and photography.
