Välkommen till en presentation av konstnärsduon Agency of Singular Investigations! Presentationen följs av ett samtal med konstnärerna Andjeas Ejiksson och Dušica Dražić.

Som en del av sitt residens på Baltic Art Center i Visby kommer den ryska konstnärsduon Anna Titova och Stanislav Shuripa, som arbetar under namnet the Agency of Singular Investigations, att ge en presentation om sitt gemensamma konstnärliga arbete. Konstnärerna kommer att ägna särskild uppmärksamhet åt sitt nuvarande arbete på BAC som bland annat är kopplad till en svensk utgåva av deras Botanico-Political Lexicon, vilket är en del av The Agency of Singular Investigations’ The Flower Power Archives.

Under samtalet vill vi presentera tre preliminära idéer som vi har utvecklat under vårt residens på BAC på Gotland. Genom att beskriva dem kommer vi att utveckla metoderna och kontexterna för ASI:s arbete i allmänhet samt de nya riktningarna för vår forskning.

En av dem, Pluriverse Lexicon, är en samling påhittade ordböcker. Om en ordbok är en modell av en värld, konstruerar uppfunna ordböcker möjliga universum som kan vara relaterade till de vanliga universumen. Dess första upplaga kommer att vara en ny utgåva av Botanico-Political Lexicon som utformats av medlemmarna i det hemliga sällskapet Flower Power (som först introducerades av ASI som en del av Flower Power Archives 2019). Detta lexikon kopplar samman esoteriskt betydelsefulla blommor med föreställningar om 1900-talets politiska historia. För medlemmarna i det hemliga sällskapet var blommornas språk inte bara ett kommunikationsmedel, utan också ett sätt att vända sig till framtida läsare. Den nya upplagan kommer att innehålla de ”fredsblommor” som planterades på Gotland av en medlem av gruppen under Perestrojkatiden.

Det andra projektet, Varvara Klykovas memoarer, behandlar posthumanistiska teman genom litteraturhistoriens optik. Det kartlägger posthumanistiska attityder till modernitetens mytologi om produktionen av ”den nya människan”. Den bygger på de publicerade minnena från den person som var en prototyp av den lilla flickan från Leo Tolstojs saga ”De tre björnarna” (1875). Andra texter som refererar till verket är ”Vredens dag” (1964) av Sever Gansovskij, ”Grundläggningsgropen” (1930) av Andrej Platonov och ”Hundens hjärta” (1924) av Michail Bulgakov.

Det tredje projektet, The invention of the Apocalyptometer, bygger på ett av ASI:s senaste verk, The Grand Project K. Det bygger på upphittade brev som skrevs av en fabriksarbetare som uppfann en maskin som kan mäta tidpunkten och förhållandena för slutet av en viss värld.

Agency of Singular Investigations (ASI) är en konstnärsduo (Anna Titova & Stanislav Shuripa) baserad i Moskva. ”Byrån” grundades 2014 som en reaktion på förändringarna i den kulturella och politiska atmosfären i Ryssland och för att reflektera över bildernas och kommunikationens ökade möjligheter att konstruera identiteter och världsåskådningar. Alla verk av ASI, oavsett om de är praktik- eller teoribaserade, ses som svar på specifika utmaningar som den historiska erfarenheten och dess effekter på den nuvarande situationen medför.

Agency of Singular Investigations verk har ställts ut på bland annat: Warszawa biennalen, Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Garage Triennal of Russian Contemporary Art och Manifesta 10. Deras texter har publicerats i ett antal internationella publikationer, bland annat Routledge, Paletten och Ord & Bild. År 2015 öppnade ASI ett experimentellt utrymme i Centre of Creative Industries Fabrika (Moskva) för forskning om de narrativa utrymmena mellan kommunikation och konstnärlig praktik.

Andjeas Ejiksson (1978) är konstnär och författare verksam i Stockholm, Sverige. Hans konstnärliga praktik utforskar hur ideologier och föreställningar etableras genom kulturella och politiska skiften, och översättningsprocesser. Ejiksson arbetar i redaktionella och textuella format samt med performance och rörlig bild. Arbetet är ofta forskningsbaserat, han har varit redaktör för flera tidskrifter liksom forskare vid HDK-Valand i Göteborg, Kungliga Konsthögskolan i Stockholm och Jan van Eyck Akademie i Maastricht. För närvarande är Ejiksson bland annat involverad i ett utställningsprojekt som kretsar kring barntelevisionens historia. Projektet samlar elva konstnärer och författare, och har visats på Fabrika i Moskva, Kalmar konstmuseum och Bildmuseet i Umeå.

Dušica Dražić är konstnär, curator och redaktör. Hon utforskar ovanliga platser med en stark politisk innebörd. Dražić analyserar deras omvandling och omprövar dem på den kulturella kontinuitetens nivå. Platsens historia och motsatta tolkningar av det förflutna har alltid stått i förgrunden i hennes praktik. Ofta innebär ämnets komplexitet en kombination av vetenskapliga och konstnärliga tillvägagångssätt, vilket främjar tvärvetenskapligt och samarbetsinriktat arbete. Hon har ställt ut sina verk internationellt i solo- och grupputställningar och har varit residenskonstnär på: Q21-Museums Quartier (Wien), IASPIS (Stockholm), ISCP (New York), KulturKontakt (Wien), TimeLab (Gent) och Tobačna 001 (Ljubljana).

Dražić har initierat och (med)curerat samarbetsprojekt och utställningar. År 2018 grundade hon och Wim Janssen OUT OF SIGHT, en mötesplats för samtidskonst i Antwerpen som ägnar sig åt audiovisuella, experimentella och tidsbaserade metoder. OUT OF SIGHT lyfter fram värdet i det som vi ofta uppfattar som annorlunda, marginellt eller till och med oönskat. Det är en plats där det poetiska och det politiska existerar sida vid sida.

Sedan 2020 har Dražić anslutit sig till wpZimmer, en internationell arbetsplats för konst med fokus på performance och hybridkonstnärliga metoder, som kreativ producent och konstnärlig medarbetare.

Welcome to a talk with artist duo Agency of Singular Investigations! The presentation will be followed by a conversation with the artists Andjeas Ejiksson and Dušica Dražić.

As a part of their residency at the Baltic Art Center in Visby, the artists Anna Titova and Stanislav Shuripa, working under the name of the Agency of Singular Investigations (ASI), are giving a talk about their joint practice. They will pay special attention to their current research at BAC, connected to, amongst other things a Swedish edition of their Botanico-Political Lexicon that is part of the duo’s project The Flower Power Archives.

During the talk, we’d like to introduce three preliminary ideas that we’ve been developing during our residency at BAC on Gotland. Describing them we’ll unfold the methods and contexts of the work of ASI in general as well as the new directions of our research.

One of them, Pluriverse Lexicon is a collection of invented dictionaries. If a dictionary is a model of a world, then invented dictionaries construct possible universes that might be related to the habitual ones. Its first iteration will be a new edition of the Botanico-Political Lexicon devised by the members of the Flower Power secret society (first introduced by ASI as a part of the Flower Power Archives in 2019). This dictionary connects esoterically significant flowers with notions of the 20th century’s political history. For the members of the secret society, the language of flowers was not only a means for communication; it was also a way to address future readers. The new edition will include the ‘flowers of peace’ planted on Gotland by a member of the group during the time of Perestroika.

The second project, Memoirs of Varvara Klykova, looks at post humanist themes through the optics of literary history. It maps post humanist attitudes to modernity’s mythology about the production of ‘the new human’. It’s based on the published memories of the person who was a prototype of the little girl from Leo Tolstoy’s fairy tale “The Three Bears” (1875). Other texts of reference in the work include “The Day of Wrath” (1964) by Sever Gansovsky, “The Foundation Pit” (1930) by Andrey Platonov, and “Heart of the Dog” (1924) by Michail Bulgakov.

The third project, The invention of the Apocalyptometer, spins off of one of the recent works by ASI, The Grand Project K. It’s based on found letters written by a factory worker who invented a machine that can measure the time and conditions of the end of any given world.

Agency of Singular Investigations is a duo (Anna Titova & Stanislav Shuripa) of spatial practitioners based in Moscow. It was founded in 2014 to respond to the changes in the cultural and political atmosphere in Russia, and to reflect on the heightened capabilities of the images and communications for constructing identities and worldviews. All works by the Agency, whether practice or theory based, are thought of as answers to specific challenges brought by the historical experience and its effects on the current situation.

Agency of Singular Investigation’s work has been exhibited at the 1st Biennale Warszawa, 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, 1st Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, 1st Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art, Manifesta 10 among others. Their writing has been featured in a number of international publications under their names or invented organisations and entities including Routledge, Paletten and Ord & Bild amongst others. In 2015 the Agency opened an experimental space in the Centre of Creative Industries Fabrika (Moscow) for research of the narrative spaces between communication and artistic practice.

Andjeas Ejiksson (1978) is an artist and writer based in Stockholm, Sweden. His artistic practice explores how ideologies and imaginaries are established through cultural and political transitions, and processes of translation. Ejiksson works in editorial and textual formats as well as with performance and moving image. The work is often research based, he has been the editor of several journals, researcher at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg, the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, and at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. Among other things, Ejiksson is currently involved in an exhibition project that revolves around the history of children’s television. The project gathered eleven artists and writers, exhibited at Fabrika in Moscow, Kalmar konstmuseum, Bildmuseet in Umeå, among other places.

Dušica Dražić is an artist, curator and editor. She explores spaces of irregularity that carry a strong political meaning. Dražić analyses their transformation and rethinks them at the level of cultural continuity. The history of the place and opposing interpretations of the past were always in the foreground of her practice. Often the complexity of the subject entails a combination of scientific and artistic approaches, that foster transdisciplinary and collaborative work. She exhibited works internationally in solo and group exhibitions and was a resident at, a.o.: Q21-Museums Quartier (Vienna), IASPIS (Stockholm), ISCP (NYC), KulturKontakt (Vienna), TimeLab (Ghent) and Tobačna 001 (Ljubljana).

Dražić has initiated and (co-)curated collaborative projects and exhibitions. In 2018 she, together with Wim Janssen, co-founded OUT OF SIGHT, a venue for contemporary art in Antwerp, dedicated to audiovisual, experimental and time-based practices. OUT OF SIGHT exposes value within what we often perceive as different, marginal or even unwanted. It is a space where the poetic and the political coexist.

Since 2020 Dražić joined wpZimmer, an international workspace for the arts, with a focus on performance and hybrid artistic practices, as a creative producer and artistic collaborator.
